What's Going On, Smokey Bear?
Greenville Campus
Join us on Friday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at MCC’s Greenville campus for “What’s Going On, Smokey Bear?” presented by Shawn Morford.
Smokey Bear turns 80 this year but wildfire and smoke are affecting Americans more than ever: how come? Greenville High School alumna Shawn Morford, who resides in Oregon, will give a primer on the history and trends of wildfire and wildfire fighting in the U.S. and Michigan, describe the highly effective and enduring Smokey Bear ad campaign and why it’s being re-examined, and share stories from her own experiences working in forestry, serving as a fire information officer, and as a victim of a recent megafire herself.
The presentation will include personal accounts, dramatic personal photos, and even a song that Shawn wrote about the experience of escaping a rapidly moving fire in her neighborhood in 2020.
Since 2014, Shawn has presented other Lifelong Learners topics including food systems, water, invasive species, and small towns. She is the daughter of Les and Vesta Morford.

The Edmund Fitzgerald Shipwreck
Greenville Campus
Join us on Thursday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at MCC’s Greenville campus for “The Edmund Fitzgerald Shipwreck” presented by Mike Fornes.
Retired radio and television personality Mike Fornes brings to life the story of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior.
Mike will share stories of the crew members, their families and the ironies of a doomed ship in one of the worst storms in Great Lakes history. His presentation is entertaining, educational and witty. He will also sing as Gordon Lightfoot and share how it all connects. You won’t want to miss this unique program!
His program has been enjoyed by many. Lifelong Learner Pat Willison shares:
“We so enjoyed Mike Fornes’ program on the Mackinac Bridge that we attended another program he presented on the Edmund Fitzgerald — a Lake Superior shipwreck. Besides the history, he told of the connection to songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, and a ballad he recorded commemorating the shipwreck. Mike Fornes’ program is entertaining, humorous and educational.”
