MCC is closing its campuses as Coronavirus crisis continues

Montcalm Community College is closing its campuses to slow the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) but will continue providing education to its students through online coursework and support services.

The shutdown is effective at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19. MCC tentatively plans to reopen on Monday, April 6, and will reassess this plan on April 1. Some staff will work remotely to provide support services to students and instructors as they continue their coursework online.

The college has implemented Live Chat, accessible on its website at www.montcalm.edu. Limited phone coverage will be available during this time at (989) 328-2111.

MCC moved its classes to an online format March 16 and continues to offer enhanced support services for students and instructors.

“This is one time that size is our advantage,” said MCC President Dr. Stacy H. Young. “We are completely committed to providing our students the quality education they expect and deserve.

“We are just as committed to taking proactive precautions to help keep our students, employees and the community safe as we face an unprecedented, evolving crisis,” she said. “Our instructors are being even more innovative and creative in the delivery of coursework as they strive to uphold our standards for academic quality.

“Our employees are committed to responding to unique needs for support services and are working long hours to ensure our business operations continue,” she added. “I am so proud of how our employees and students have come together to continue as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves. We will come out of this stronger as a college and a community.”

Until now, MCC’s campuses have been open for employees and small groups of students. The latest decision is part of an effort to protect the broader community and “flatten the curve” of infection.

“Our instructors and employees have responded to this crisis in amazing and creative ways,” Young said. “We know our students are working hard, and we want to see them complete their classes. We are here to help them.”

MCC will provide additional details on the college website at www.montcalm.edu/coronavirus as more information becomes available.
