2025 Book Selection

In an Instant by Suzanne Redfearn

Life is over in an instant for sixteen-year-old Finn Miller when a devastating car accident tumbles her and ten others over the side of a mountain. Suspended between worlds, she watches helplessly as those she loves struggle to survive.

Impossible choices are made, decisions that leave the survivors tormented with grief and regret. Unable to let go, Finn keeps vigil as they struggle to reclaim their shattered lives. Jack, her father, who seeks vengeance against the one person he can blame other than himself; her best friend, Mo, who bravely searches for the truth as the story of their survival is rewritten; her sister Chloe, who knows Finn lingers and yearns to join her; and her mother, Ann, who saved them all but is haunted by her decisions. Finn needs to move on, but how can she with her family still in pieces?

Heartrending yet ultimately redemptive, In an Instant is a story about the power of love, the meaning of family, and carrying on…even when it seems impossible.

Community Action

Montcalm Care Network has identified a significant need for the individuals residing in adult foster homes. While their basic needs are adequately met, their limited incomes restrict their ability to enjoy certain everyday luxuries that many of us take for granted. To address this, Montcalm Care Network is requesting donations of gift cards for various activities and stores, such as:

  • Pizza and Fast-Food Restaurants: To offer them the pleasure of dining out.
  • Movie Theaters: To provide entertainment and a break from routine.
  • Bowling Alleys: To encourage physical activity and social interaction.
  • Hobby Lobby: To support their creative interests and hobbies.
  • Dollar General: To help them purchase everyday essentials and small treats.
These initiatives aim to enhance their quality of life and bring a bit of joy and normalcy to their daily experiences. The character Oz in Suzanne Redfearn’s book In an Instant exemplifies someone who might benefit from such support.

Montcalm Care Network also serves individuals who are incarcerated through their substance use program. One of the resources they find particularly valuable is the book Codependent No More by Melody Beattie (paperback only). Care Network's recovery coach frequently recommends this book to clients as it provides essential insights and guidance on overcoming codependency.

Donations of this book would be greatly appreciated and would significantly benefit clients. This need is reminiscent of the struggles faced by Vance in Suzanne Redfearn’s In an Instant, where support and understanding are crucial in dealing with substance abuse. Your contributions can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those striving for recovery and a better future.
