Lucas Hirkaway joins golf team at MCC

Lucas Hirkaway is the first athlete to sign as a member of Montcalm Community College’s golf team.

Hirkaway, 17, of Sheridan, has been playing golf for eight years.

What made me decide to play at MCC was that it was local and it would allow me to study something I want to do in the future and play a sport I love,” he said.

He will study exercise science at MCC. He played golf in high school at Central Montcalm and is looking forward to continuing to do something that he enjoys.

“I’m looking forward to help set a path for future sports at MCC and help build up the golf program,” Hirkaway said.

Doug Harkema, MCC’s golf coach, said he’s very excited about Lucas being the first member of his team. Lucas filled out a questionnaire, and after a few conversations, decided to come to MCC and join the golf team.

“It’s something that is very special, because he is the first!” Harkema said. “I look forward to watching him play his senior year, and working with him over the next two years.”

In his spare time, Lucas likes to hang out with family and friends. And, when he has the time, he plays golf.

Golf is one of several sports offered at MCC as part of its Centurion Athletics program. Visit Montcalm.edu/athletics for more information about MCC Centurion Athletics or contact Athletic Director Hunter Redman at athletics@montcalm.edu or 989-328-1095.

MCC is a member of the Michigan Community College Athletics Association (MCCAA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
