Montcalm Community College recently recognized five students for their creative writing efforts in the college’s annual Creative Writing Contest. 

Students submitted poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction entries. 

Barbe Stevenson, of Belding, won first place for short fiction with her work titled “10:10.” Sophia Friedrich, of Palo, placed second for her work titled “Taken.” 

In the creative non-fiction category, Sandra Dymerski, of Sand Lake, won first place for “It Was Don Goyo’s Fault.” Taylor Rumsey, of Greenville, placed second for “Using the Enemy.” 

Sarnia Gunderson, of Riverdale, placed first and second in the poetry category with “Phantom Waves” and “The Flower Bed.” 

Dr. Gary L. Hauck, Dean Emeritus of Arts and Sciences at MCC, judged the competition. 

First- and second-place winners received a cash prize, and their entries will be submitted as MCC’s entries to the statewide Liberal Arts Network for Development (LAND) Creative Writing Contest, where they will compete with entries from Michigan’s 28 community colleges.
